About the Course

The Leadership Capstone is the culminating course within the LEAD Scholars Academy. In this course, LEAD Scholars and Leadership Studies Minor students have the opportunity to accumulate what they have learned and experienced in their previous exposure to leadership, both in and out of the classroom, and use this integrating experience to demonstrate they are capable of reaching their full potential as leaders and citizens. Students will practice and demonstrate the leadership skills they will need to succeed after matriculation from the program.

Learning Objectives

• Educated students in the principles of the Social Change Model, leadership theoretical frameworks, and strategies for making a positive social impact in society.
• Designed a comprehensive curriculum that encompassed communication strategies, leadership identity, and the practical applications of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development.
• Developed curriculum, including rubrics, lesson plans, lectures, and engaging active-learning activities to foster students' communication skills.
• Utilized Canvas LMS to design and implement course curriculum, assessments, and interactive learning activities tailored to the field of communications.
• Guided students in conducting research specific to communications, including academic leadership research papers, locating peer-reviewed journals, creating literature reviews, and adhering to APA style formatting.
• Facilitated the development of course modules, complete with unit-specific learning outcomes, multimedia-rich lessons, and alignment with national Quality Matters course design standards.
• Taught students about the vital connection between leadership and professional development in the context of communications.
• Explored topics such as personal branding, public speaking, effective communication, ePortfolios, and crafting a leadership philosophy within the communication field.
• Utilized active-learning strategies and innovative technology tools to enhance students' digital literacy.
• Designed assignments that leveraged Adobe Creative Cloud Express and other cutting-edge educational technologies to foster creative communication skills.
